A Hieronymus in the case, ideal figure of painting and its penitent, that's how you could see him day in day out, sitting at a painting in the southwest corner of his atelier, year in year out, in extreme seclusion, forced back by his canvases and papers in the course of time to a minimum of remaining space, surrounded, covered with works, him: Gerald Schmid.

Fleeing public the way others are seeking it, it has been no easy undertaking to persuade Gerald Schmid to move from his self-chosen hermitage and take part in this small film. A portrait about the necessity and joy of his work, untarnished by all -arts and -isms.
